Character Name: Frog
Character Canon: Chrono Trigger
History: Ribbit.
AU History: Some twenty years ago, a young man named Glenn was born in Caldera. He was not a strong young man in his youth; quite the opposite, he was a scrawny thing and somewhat sickly as a child. He grew up in the poorer classes, and he might have become a normal worker in the city if it weren't for his best friend. Glenn grew up alongside a lad who was everything that he wasn't: brave, strong, determined, and an Earthkin instead of a normal human. He was the sort of boy who seemed like he would grow up to be a hero, and he protected Glenn. In turn, Glenn idolized his best friend, and became his sidekick.
They became fast friends as they grew older. Both boys were intensely loyal to each other, and as they grew older, that friendship and loyalty only deepened. His friend was determined to rise beyond his birth; to become a hero of Caldera, much like General Ironborn, and make a name for himself. Glenn didn't have such ambitious and ideas of glories for himself, but he wanted to see his friend succeed. So, like always, he followed his friend -- and, this time, followed him into the Steel Battalion.
This young man distinguished himself in the Steel Battalion. Glenn followed after him in his rise through the ranks; he kept Glenn close as an aide and a second, and Glenn learned to fight, to assist him in his work. He became an elite soldier, entrusted with missions from commanders. One of these was particularly worrisome: a rogue mage, who had escaped Sanctuary, was waging a war against the Gigan occupiers in the countryside, but his methods and use of Pokemon had endangered both Gigan and Calderan. The mage's followers had even attacked Calderan patrols, accusing them of not doing enough to help Sanctuary in the past.
The two friends decided to chase this rogue mage down. They fought him in the woods near the city, where they lost against him in battle. His friend was killed by the mage and his followers outright. His Honedge, the Pokemon that he had partnered with, was badly injured. Glenn tried to crawl away. The mage captured him and cursed him, turning him into a Homonculus: a Shifter, who assumed the form of a Froakie. The curse laid on him kept him from changing back into his human form, for the rest of his days.
Glenn fled, collecting his fallen friend's Honedge, Masamune. In his cursed form, with his best friend dead, he didn't dare return to Caldera. Instead, he took to living in a hole in the swamplands, which he outfitted with some salvaged furniture. He began to call himself Frog, taking it upon himself to carry on his comrade's legacy; he helped travelers and reached a kind hand out where they needed it, while he practiced with his new abilities. He took the name "Frog," discarding his old identity in his guilt.
Recent events have made him decide to investigate Union. The liberation of Sanctuary -- and a desire for revenge against the mage who killed his childhood best friend and laid such a curse on him -- along with other events have made him decide to travel to the city, and see what it is about.
Canon Personality: Frog is, outwardly, plays the part of a knight perfectly. He is old-fashioned and chivalrous; he never shows fear, he is exceedingly courteous to all that he meets, and he maintains a serious and dignified air. If it weren't for his appearance, which is at least very strange (if not monstrous), one would likely think that Frog was the perfect knight. However, that perfection -- much like his outward form -- isn't quite true, and the truth is more complicated.
It can be seen in how Frog is quiet. He doesn't discuss his past, nor does he divulge his true name. Frog isn't shy or awkward, any longer, nor is he a liar. He is, however, a tremendously reserved individual. When he meets Leene again for the first time after his curse, he doesn't tell his former friend and queen who he really is or about Cyrus's fate. He keeps those things to himself, and instead lets his actions speak for him.
Frog learned to behave like such a knight be emulating Cyrus. In some sense, he is actively attempting to play the part of his departed best friend. Some of his old personality can leak through in how he is quiet and reserved. This is a way that he deals with his nervousness and shyness; he was always a quiet man. He can miss, however, that this imitation is still a genuine confidence. His imitation of Cyrus isn't a faked act, but rather a tribute that he has truly incorporated into himself.
The guilt over Cyrus's death, though, gives him many a doubt. He thinks, at times, that he is faking it; he thinks that his bravery and his actions are not genuine. He thinks poorly of himself, feeling that he was once a coward. He misses that he isn't a coward any longer, and that he truly transformed himself. This guilt, while it tears him apart inside, has motivated him to become a better person and live well for his friend's sake.
Frog has become a genuinely good person. Under that reserved, knightly exterior, Frog is a genuinely kind and honorable man. He can see this, at times; when he imitates Cyrus, he feels a pride in himself and a confidence that -- while he sometimes feels is affectation -- is quite real. His sense of honor is, too, and he is quite particular about helping those who cannot help themselves and guarding the lives of the innocent.
However, the guilt over Cyrus's loss leads him to have a deep anger about his friend's death. It is not a hot rage, but rather a cold anger. We can see this both in how, with only a little prodding, he will go after Magus. In endings where Magus is not felled, Frog will quietly leave -- and then single-handedly fight his way through Magus's castle, slay his henchmen, and duel the sorcerer. Frog is honorable, but that sense of honor absolutely allows for inflict violence and seeking vengeance.
AU Deviation: Frog being from Caldera leads to several changes. First, Frog isn't attempting to be (overtly) a knight, as Caldera doesn't have them the way Guardia, circa 600 AD, does. He still styles himself as an honorable Calderan warrior. He is, however, not so old-fashioned -- he is terribly formal, very honorable, and largely the same, but he doesn't pepper his speech with excessive Old English and other formalities. He sounds old-fashioned, not archaic.
He is deeply loyal to Caldera, much like he is Guardia. He is thoroughly Calderan in his attitudes and behaviors. Frog doesn't want to show his face in Caldera, still, but he is proud of his homeland. Furthermore, in Chrono Trigger, magic is a rare force that he learns to harness; in Brave New World, he is distrustful of mages and Sanctuary, given what was done to him.
Frog still considers his new form, and being stuck as a Shifter, as a terrible curse. However, he is less horrified by it -- he had met Shifters while in Caldera, as part of the Steel Battalion. Frog is incensed that he cannot transform back, and he does not see his new abilities as a Homonculus as a blessing. He doesn't, however, view himself as an inhuman monster in quite the same way. He has a context to place his curse in, in this setting.
Canon Abilities: Frog is primarily a physical fighter in the game, with high physical attack and defense. He is skilled with a sword; many of his best attacks are with a sword, and he uses terrific sword techniques to great effect. Frog also can use the legendary Masamune, one of the strongest weapons in the game.
He also can jump very high and use his long, sticky tongue for attacks; his amphibian nature actually enters his attacks.
Finally, Frog can use water magic. This includes water spells for damage, and combining magic with his sword techniques. Frog is also one of the game's healers, along with Marle; he receives spells to heal his companions of wounds. He isn't as strong at magic as Marle is, however.
Enlightened Abilities: Frog is a Homunculus, with the sub-ability of being a Shifter. The limitation he has is that he is stuck as a Froakie (or an evolution thereof). The mage claimed the curse would last until his death, but that may not be true (unlike the curse laid on him by Magus in canon). His typing is thus Froakie's; when he finishes his evolutions, he becomes Water/Dark.
Starter Pokémon: Frog has his pal's Honedge, named Masamune. He sometimes wields Masamume directly as a sword, which is how said friend often fought.

SAMPLES
If desired, you may answer some of the following questions in lieu of samples. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie. The purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.
• What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
"They're our loyal companions. Aye, the bond between Masamune and my old t'was incredible. I should be so lucky to claim a tie so strong, but I can see that they make us better at doing what we hope to. With them at our side, we can better go about our task."
• What do you feel your role in your city is?
"'Tis not right for me to return to Caldera, not after I failed her and failed my oldest friend. But nor can I turn my back on her. I wouldn't give my sword in service to another, but... my lot is to stay away, and provide my help from afar."
• To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
"...I did not go far enough for him, even if he was not lost in the sense you meant. It is a mistake I shall not make twice. As far as I must, aye, and further still until the job is done."
• What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
"The things that make a man into a fine warrior and a finer person. Courage and strength, aye, but the honor and sense to use them well. Of course, 'tis the lot of some to protect and some to be protected. There is no shame in lacking those things."
• The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
"How I was given my form and the mistakes I made... I find it unlikely the gods would look favorably upon humanity, once they knew more of me. But that is reason enough to better myself, so they might judge differently."
• What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
"To make right what was wrong. My friend... he was a better man than I could ever pretend to be. But the world is without him, and because I wasn't strong enough to change his fate. 'Tis impossible to ever take his place, but I must try just the same. This curse gave me some strength, and with his gone, I must use it to protect the people of Caldera -- and the people of this entire world -- from the deprivations of those who would hurt them."
• You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
"I am no scholar, but I know this: wisdom can lead to the other two. It is better to seek knowledge. Those who only seek power... they remind me far too much of that mage. Wisdom is the worthy answer."
• When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
"A bond should be forged, if it can be. But, we shouldn't forget our duty as warriors: if this Pokemon would threaten others, then it falls to use to use our strength to make those without it safe."
• What strengths make you most qualified for your role within your city?
"This form given to me... 'tis not one I relish, without the ability to change back. But it gave me a strength like an Earthkin's. But it isn't such might, I think, that matters most. Walking in the steps of my old friend, trying to live well as he did and protect others, that is how I will do the most good."
• No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
"Mm... it wasn't meant to be. What I have is what I deserve."
(The only lie here. If Frog was being entirely honest with himself, he would want his best friend's abilities. I figure he was a Child of the Unyielding Steel, a Fire/Steel type. This is entirely nostalgia and hero worship on Frog's part.)
